Before the procedure begins, you will meet with Dr. Paula Hade (or another healthcare provider) for an initial consultation. During this visit:

  • Medical history review: Dr. Hade will discuss your medical history and confirm how far along the pregnancy is, usually through an ultrasound.

  • Discussion of options: She’ll go over all available options, including medical and surgical termination, and ensure that this decision is fully informed and voluntary.

  • Explaining the process: Dr. Hade will explain how the medications work, what you can expect physically, and any potential side effects.

Once you're ready to proceed:

  • Mifepristone is given, either at the clinic or at home (depending on local regulations). This medication works by blocking the hormone progesterone, which is necessary for the pregnancy to continue.

  • Effect: Without progesterone, the lining of the uterus begins to break down, and the pregnancy cannot progress.

Within 24 to 48 hours after taking the mifepristone:

  • Misoprostol is taken, usually at home. This medication causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy tissue.

  • Physical effects: You will likely experience cramping, bleeding, and the passage of pregnancy tissue. This is similar to a heavy period or early miscarriage, and it can take several hours.

During this phase:

  • Cramping and bleeding are common, and Dr. Hade will ensure you have pain relief options, such as over-the-counter pain medications (e.g., ibuprofen) and guidance on managing discomfort.

  • Rest and self-care are important, and Dr. Hade will recommend how to care for yourself physically and emotionally in the days following the procedure.

A follow-up visit (or phone consultation) is scheduled within 1 to 2 weeks after taking the medication to:

  • Ensure the abortion is complete: Dr. Hade will confirm that the pregnancy has been successfully terminated, often using an ultrasound or blood test.

  • Check your well-being: She will address any concerns you have, discuss contraceptive options (if desired), and ensure you're recovering well both physically and emotionally.

Dr. Hade recognises that emotional well-being is as important as physical recovery. She offers:

  • Support resources: Counseling or mental health support is available if you need to process any emotions surrounding the experience.

  • Open communication: Dr. Hade encourages you to reach out if you have concerns or simply need to talk, even after the follow-up appointment.
