Aftercare
Before proceeding with an IUD, you’ll have a detailed consultation with Dr Paula Hade to discuss your medical history, reproductive goals, and any previous experiences with contraception. She’ll explain the different types of IUDs available — hormonal and non-hormonal — and help you decide which option best suits your needs. This appointment will also cover:
-
How IUDs work and their effectiveness (over 99% at preventing pregnancy)
-
The pros and cons of hormonal vs copper IUDs
-
Possible side effects (such as cramping, spotting, or changes to your periods)
-
The process for removal if and when you decide to take it out
The insertion is done in the clinic and usually takes only a few minutes. Here’s what to expect:
-
Managing discomfort: A speculum is used, similar to a Pap smear, and a local anaesthetic may be applied to the cervix to reduce discomfort.
-
Inserting the IUD: The IUD is placed through the cervix into the uterus using a thin, flexible applicator. You may feel some cramping during the procedure.
-
Recovery time: Most women can resume normal activity the same day, though some prefer to rest for a few hours afterwards.
Within 24 to 48 hours after taking the mifepristone:

-
Misoprostol is taken, usually at home. This medication causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy tissue.
-
Physical effects: You will likely experience cramping, bleeding, and the passage of pregnancy tissue. This is similar to a heavy period or early miscarriage, and it can take several hours.
-
Effectiveness: Hormonal IUDs are effective immediately if inserted during the first 7 days of your cycle. Copper IUDs are effective right away at any time.
-
Follow-up: A check-up may be scheduled a few weeks later to ensure the IUD is in place. You should contact Dr Hade if you experience ongoing pain, fever, or unusual discharge.
-
Ongoing care: Dr Hade encourages you to reach out with any questions and offers support throughout your adjustment period. She’ll also guide you on when to check the IUD strings and when removal or replacement will be due (typically 5–10 years, depending on the type).
Some cramping and light bleeding are common in the days following your IUD insertion. This usually settles within a week. Simple pain relief like paracetamol or ibuprofen, rest, and a heat pack can help ease discomfort.
Dr Paula Hade will provide you with personalised aftercare advice and is available to support you if you have any concerns during your recovery. A follow-up appointment may be recommended 4–6 weeks after the insertion to confirm the IUD is correctly positioned.

Please contact the clinic if you experience any of the following:
-
Ongoing or worsening pelvic pain beyond a few days
-
Prolonged or heavy bleeding (e.g. soaking a pad every hour)
-
Unusual or offensive discharge
-
You can no longer feel the IUD strings or feel the plastic part of the IUD at your cervix

You should seek urgent medical care or go to your nearest emergency department if you:
-
Have severe abdominal pain that is sharp or constant
-
Experience fever, chills, or feel generally unwell (which may indicate infection)
-
Are bleeding very heavily and feel faint, dizzy, or weak
-
Think you may be pregnant with an IUD in place

Dr Hade’s priority is ensuring you feel safe and supported, so don’t hesitate to reach out if you’re unsure — it’s always better to check.
